It's a go.... and treadmills at the gym

At Isaac's 9 month check up the doctor mentioned that he wanted Isaac to be around the 25 percentile for his weight. I am not to terribly concerned.  Given where he started (not even on the chart) I feel as long as he's gaining weight and meeting all the major milestones then if he's not in the 25 percentile then so what. We are certainly going to try to get his weight up but won't be bent out of shape if he doesn't hit what his doctor wants. Some kids are just tall and skinny. We are trying to give him more real foods.  By real foods I mean not purees. Isaac however loves them and hates pretty much everything else.  He's going to be a teenager still having mommy shoveling in pureed carrots.  Oh I kid.  We are trying other foods with little luck.

Last week someone suggested mixing quinoa in with his purees.  It adds some texture and is still small enough for him to swallow without chewing fully. Plus it adds calories and lots of protein. The first day he had a few spoonfuls.  The next day he had a little more. After several days it doesn't even phase him anymore. He loves it! We also tried avocado. He's not a huge fan... unless we trick him and put applesauce in it. I made a stew dish last week and put some of the cut up veggies on his high chair. He wouldn't pick the pieces up on his own (which is is capable of) but when I put a few in his mouth he ate them.... then quit. Tonight I gave him a small piece of my apple. He picked it up and started chewing on it. So we're getting there with the table foods. I think the best idea is to keep trying.  I am going to try to have an apple everyday at dinner and share it with him...aka give him a small section.

So I've been training... kinda. I'm running a few times a week and doing some cross training twice a week.  I attempt strength training but I get lazy. I'm trying to build up my mileage again. I can probably run 5 miles... 6 if I pushed it.  I do have a treadmill at home but use the treadmill at the gym too. My health insurance will help pay for some of my membership if I go 12 times a month. So one of my runs is usually on the treadmill at the gym. The gym also has a daycare. So that helps. It's hard though to find the motivation. I spend all day at work... away from Isaac. So it's hard to go pick him up from daycare only to take him to the gym's daycare.  So for now we just go twice a week (during the work week). I spend no more than an hour at the gym. Usually about 45 minutes.  That is hard... considering I used to workout at a minimum of one hour. But the way I see it... I am getting exercise in which is better then nothing. My family is very important to me and I think that is the right balance for now. On the weekends I do spend an hour at the gym.

There is one thing I hate about the treadmills at the gym. The is a "rule" of only 30 minutes on some of the cardio equipment. So you have to "sign up" on a white board. If it's not very busy it doesn't seem like it's a big deal. But 5:30pm... well it's busy.  So i'm a good girl and sign up. Lesson learned... be naughty and sign up for an hour.  That way you can get 30-45 min of running in. This past week I only signed up for 30 minutes... I noticed someone signed up after me so I promptly got off when I really wanted to keep running (for only a half a mile more). Guess who didn't show up for their treadmill. Grrr... If you are going to sign up... then show up... or erase your name. There are also machines where it's "first come first service" and you don't need to sign up. I might try to get one of those too.

In a nutshell there is a half marathon in May which also happens to land on my birthday. I plan to register and run it... I can't think of a better way celebrate my birthday.  I also plan to run another half marathon in the summer sometime. I am already registered for a half marathon in October. The registration fee was only 30 bucks and it's one of my favorite races.  The first half marathon I ever ran.... which I thought I blogged about but I started my blog after I ran it.  I'm looking forward to lots of racing in 2013.

I think it would be nice to end with a photo of my little buddy.

  1. My friend was having problems moving her son past purees and she ended up giving him a Banana Brush to chew on (advice of a speech therapist) and started letting him play in his purees and then gradually introducing puffs and such. I have the opposite problem with Charlotte (she gets pissed when I try to feed her), so I spend all of my days making grilled cheese. These little people are so stubborn!
